Novice gardeners start their landscape garden project full of energy, enthusiasm and hope. Halfway through the project, they find that things are not turning out as expected and costing them more and more money. They eventually lose steam and enthusiasm, and finally throw in the towel. Costly mistakes such as these could have been averted if only they had started out with a good overall plan.

During the planning stage, take note of the immovable structures in the area such as the house, and all other permanent features that can’t be altered or moved out of the way. As a landscape gardener, you should work your dream garden around these existing areas.

What is the purpose of your landscape garden? Will it be a floral showcase that only the eyes can appreciate, or will it be a garden that you can relax in? You also need to reserve a space for leisure and recreation especially if you have a growing family and entertain guests often.

Determine which type of plant will adapt well to certain areas of your landscape garden’s environment. Make sure each plant type is in a place it is naturally accustomed to. Placing it in a sun-drenched spot will damage or kill a photosensitive plant. Likewise, placing a light-dependent plant under the shade will cause it to wither. A garden with live healthy plants is more pleasing than a rock garden.

Designing a landscape garden is a play of light and shadows. Think ahead if the young sapling you planted today will block the light from your bedroom window a couple of years from now. It can’t be moved to another area when it’s big unless you cut it down.

Also consider if large shady plants will eventually deprive the plants growing beneath them of much-needed sunlight. Plants growing under the shadow of taller plants or trees are often undersized and won’t bear much fruit or flowers.

Any landscape gardener worth their salt will know that water flow is an integral part of a garden for plants to survive. Determine if your area has low or high water pressure. Consider also if your area is prone to constant heavy rainfall. These factors will give you an idea of what kind of plants you should have in your garden.

Constructing a colorful landscape garden is possible even if you are a novice gardener. Just be sure to plan well and make the proper judgment and your every effort will eventually pay off.

It doesn’t have to be Christmas or any special occasion for you to give a present to someone special. Take garden gifts as an example. These gifts can be given to anybody all year round for no particular reason at all. The simple message is that you care enough for that particular person.

You probably have cherished family members or friends who simply love gardening that you’d like to surprise with a gardening present. First of all, you can visit the garden centre to know what items are available. You can also do a bit of online searching to find out what popular gadgets or tools are selling.

You will be amazed at the wide selection of products that are available – from inexpensive sales items to downright extravagant ones. Great gifts aren’t necessarily expensive. Remember that you will want to give the appropriate present that will endure so you recipient can enjoy it for years.

If your recipient is a novice gardener, you will want to start with simple essentials like a watering can, gardening gloves, a pruner or a beginner’s book on plants and gardens. There are also gift baskets that are already prepared.

If your mother is an avid gardener, then you can go to the garden centre where they have special garden gifts for mom on sale. If she has arthritis problems, you can get her one of those power pruners that can be operated with the slightest hand pressure. You can also choose to give her seeds that revolve around a central theme like flowers, vegetables or herbs. Along with the seed packets, include some small adorable pots and a journal to keep notes,

On the other hand, your father could be the one who has the green thumb in the family. You may have noticed him puttering around the garden wearing a worn out apron and a tool belt that’s been worse for wear. In this case, the best garden gifts for dad would be a brand new garden tool belt and a work apron monogrammed with a silly slogan like “Gardeners do it in the dirt”, or something.

However, if you’re not too sure about the right gift to give, then give them a gift certificate purchased from the local garden centre. Gardeners have a need for supplies all year round and your present will help offset the cost of their garden expense.

A well-rounded gardener will truly appreciate the thought you’ve put into their present. Surprising a loved one with a gift they need for their garden will reward you with a two green thumbs up.

You probably know an avid gardener, perhaps more, who would truly appreciate gardening present on a special occasion. There are a lot of gift ideas to please both the novice and weathered gardener and the wonderful thing about gardening presents is that they are readily available anywhere – in the malls, greenhouses and nurseries, farmer’s markets, gardening stores, and even online.

If purchasing a present for a novice gardener, informational books on plants and gardens are always welcome gardening gifts for men and women alike. These kinds of books will provide information on the variety of plants found in different regions and climates, and how much water, sunlight and nutrients they require to survive in gardens. They can also provide guidelines on how the novice gardener can deal with gardening problems such as bugs, weeds and diseases. These books can be bought at a local bookstore, gardening stores or online.

For both the novice and expert gardener, nothing beats a plant as a gardening present. Whether it’s a traditional Christmas gift such as a poinsettia or something random like orchid, a plant is surely to be enjoyed and treasured. Or you can also purchase seeds or a bulb for your recipient to transplant. A perennial will be a great gift that will, with proper care, keep on giving for years.

Probably the best and most practical gardening present is gardening tools. This can be anything as basic a garden trowel set or a hoe to something more sophisticated like a leaf blower or a power pruner. Other all-time favourites are sprinklers, hedge trimmers and gloves.

If your mother or a special girl in your life is a gardener, she would adore you for being so thoughtful and sensitive of her interest. The best gardening gifts for women are gardening tools that are easy for her to operate or saplings of young plant in decorative garden pots. Better yet, get her a pot of a flowering plant in full bloom which will last much longer than flowers that wither in a couple of days in a vase.

The finest gardening present for your favourite gardener would have to be a gift certificate to a garden centre where plants and gardening tools are available. With the gift certificate, your recipient can choose any equipment they can add to their toolbox or any variety of plant that they may fancy.

Surprising your loved ones with great gardening gifts will always get you a green thumbs up!

While a standard plant pot is commonly utilised to raise and display indoor and outdoor plants, smaller ones are used for seeding and raising young plants. They are usually made of clay or wood, although metal and plastic plant pots are now getting to be a common sight.

When considering a container, remember that most plastic pots have the tendency to crack in cold weather, and are not ideal for growing plants outdoors. Rather, select a pot made of polythene and polypropylene as this will not disintegrate in the cold.

Because of their flexibility, polythene pots can be folded flat for storage without getting damaged. They become free standing once they get filled with garden soil and can be used to pick out seedlings before planting.

Environment-friendly pots that are biodegradable are made from mixing wood fibre or recycled paper, peat and essential nutrients to enhance plant growth. These pots are ideal for plants with sensitive roots that can’t be stirred up as the pot can be set directly into the ground. The pot gradually degrades and allows the plant’s roots to pass through it to base on surrounding soil. Biodegradable pots can be constructed by gardeners from double-thick newspaper formed into cones.

Most plant pots for sale are available in round and square shapes. While the round pots are traditionally used, square pots can take in more compost and can be crammed together to make more space. Make sure to use a pot with sloping sides. This will allow easy removal of the plant and its root system for repotting or ground planting.

Most standard pots have the same width and height although this may vary with other versions. Seed pans, which are used for seed germination, have a depth that’s a third of its diameter. Half pots, used for plants such as the evergreen azaleas which have small root systems, have a depth that’s half its diameter. Long Toms, ideal for plants such as lily-of-the-valley and alpines that require deep root runs, have a depth that’s one-fourth to one-third longer than its diameter.

Plant pot saucers can be utilised to capture excess water after watering plants and can also be used to provide plants water from below. They can be obtained in plastic or clay and can be purchased as a set along with the matching plant pots. After watering, empty the saucers to prevent the potted soil from getting soggy.

The use of raised garden beds designs provides additional planting area when you are working on limited garden space. By planting upwards instead of outwards, you can manage to grow more crops within the same area. Trailing plants like cucumbers and squash find raised garden designs more conducive to growth. Strawberries also thrive successfully on raised gardens.

Allowed to grow in their own area, plants in raised beds will provide more fruits and vegetable and discourage the growth of weeds. This is because plants grow thick in their own space, allowing very little or no space for weeds to survive.

Weeds and grasses, however, have ways to infiltrate any garden so you must also find time to deal with them. If allowed to thrive between the raised beds, they will multiply in no time and invade your garden. Over time, they become tough and deeply entrenched which will make them more difficult to get rid of.

Eliminate the weeds as soon as you see them rise above the ground. This is one advantage of a raised garden; if you see small plants outside the raised beds, you don’t have to think twice to determine whether it is a weed or a vegetable. You can pull out anything that’s outside the raised beds. Within the raised beds, however, you must use caution before pulling anything out.

If you live in the colder area of the country, raised garden beds construction can help insulate the plants’ roots during the winter. Perennial herbs like strawberries come back every year to yield more of their fruits as long as mulch is added at the end of the season. The raised garden’s design protects the roots from cold. This also works for the rhubarb plant.

A raised garden is a beneficial way of keeping your plants healthy and productive without the use of pesticides. If you have never tried this alternative way to raise plants before, then now is the time. Ask for suggestions from neighbors who use this method or, better yet, bring your garden design to your local nursery and ask for professional advice.

Weathered gardeners experienced in raised garden beds will also be happy to offer you suggestions on how to raise plants using the raised bed method. You can also do a bit of research on the internet to get additional information. If you have limited planting space and want to raise more plants, try the raised garden method. This could be your best season yet.

Not every gardener, novice or professional, share the same sentiments when it’s time to prune tough woody stems using a hand pruner that leaves your hand sore after too many plants have been pruned. This applies particularly to the elderly or those suffering from arthritic conditions and hand-related accidents. Pruning becomes an unwelcome burden in these cases so it’s a wise decision to look for better alternatives that will bring back the joy of pruning.

The first example can still be classified as a hand pruner although it works by using the ratchet principle where you don’t have to utilize real hand pressure to cut through sturdy wooden plant stems. By placing the stem between the blades, you simply employ a few light squeezes on the handles. Every squeeze cause the blades to close further until the stem is severed.

On the next level, you can purchase corded electric pruners. There is also the cordless electric pruner which runs on a rechargeable battery, not unlike cordless tools like the power drill or power screwdriver.

Though they share the same features, most gardeners prefer the cordless pruner because of its ease of use and portability. This time, you don’t have to apply hand pressure; merely depress the trigger and the blades close to cut the stem.

You can also choose a gas-powered pruner which is run by compressed gas which is usually propane. You place the blades against the stem that has to be pruned, press the trigger which releases the gas that closes the blade.

A gas pruner comes in two types. One can be connected to a gas canister, similar to those that operate paintball guns, and used commercially. Then there is the refillable version that houses a small gas chamber that is refilled by a larger propane refiller tank. This operates much like a refillable gas lighter.

All these three types of garden pruners provide ease and convenience for the user. The ratchet-type pruner needs light hand pressure to operate the blades, while the electric pruner, as well as the gas pruner, needs no hand pressure whatsoever besides pressing the trigger mechanism that closes the blades to cut the stem.

You don’t have to give up the joy of pruning just because your hands can’t take it. If you only have limited strength in your hands, then these new pruning devices will surely bring back your enjoyment in pruning.

Most people don’t realize that bamboo, no matter how tall it grows, is really a type of grass. It is mostly found in tropical areas around the world. It is for this reason that these plants have adapted to regions with warm weather and abundant rainfall.

The bamboo is exquisitely beautiful that garden enthusiasts search for bamboo plants for sale to raise them indoors.

Before planting your first bamboo indoor, you have to be aware that these plants require much humidity and warmth. Deprive them of these factors and you’ll be raising unhappy and unhealthy plants.

After purchasing your bamboo, place it in a sheltered area that has both light and shade. This will give the plant a chance to adapt to living indoors. Do not give the bamboo any fertilizer at home as it may have already been fertilized in the nursery. Before taking the bamboo home, be sure to ask the nursery staff for care instructions.

The degree of care indoor bamboo needs depends on the time of its planting. If it is planted during the winter season, then extra protection is needed and the wintry soil has to be loosened deep down to the roots.

The amount of watering your bamboo should receive depends on the distinct climate in its current location. If you discover that the soil indoor dries out faster than it should, then soaking the plant in water for a while will revive it after getting on with insufficient water.

Bamboo doesn’t necessarily have to be watered everyday. In bamboo plants care, each plant
is handled on a case-to-case basis. You will know it needs more water if the bamboo’s leaves are curling. Leaves hanging down means the plant is getting too much water.

Misting is an important step for taking care of the watering needs of your plant. It involves spraying fine mist of water on the plant which imitates the condition the bamboo is accustomed to. Using a vaporiser can accomplish this task.

As much as bamboo is resistant to pests, they sometimes get infested with insects, microbes or fungus that cause spots to appear. Your garden supply store can tell you the right amount of pesticide to use.

Becoming adept in the care of bamboo plants comes with a bit of practice and patience. You will have to take your bamboo outside in your garden occasionally to allow it to get the right amount of sunlight necessary for photosynthesis.

Transform your dull backyard into an explosion of vibrant colors and exotic fragrance with a few outdoor planters arranged in the right places. They can be transported conveniently and easily modified according to your current mood or taste. What’s more, they bestow nature’s color and excitement to what could have been an uninteresting piece of property. You can actually try different arrangements with them.

Planters can bring you a little closer to nature and create a serene and relaxing ambiance in your backyard as well. You can work with just one variety of bloom or you can mix textures, foliage and colors in a dazzling combination. So roll up your sleeves and put your favourite flowers to work.

The best way to look for the ideal planters for your garden is to search online right in the comfort of your home. Planters come in a wide selection of sizes and materials to easily match the motif you have in mind. Planters are usually made out of cypress or redwood that are visually attractive and adaptable to most weather conditions. Outdoor planters are also manufactured from materials like metal, plastic, fiberglass, iron or terra cotta so your choices are unlimited.

For variation, you can move some planters in other areas of your patio. You can place one to line a garden path where it can be a point of interest on the way to your patio. You can take in the heady fragrances of the assorted blooms or enjoy the relaxing coolness under the lush verdant foliage. Some plants can even act as natural insect repellants against bugs that can ruin your backyard barbecue. Just plant some geraniums and say goodbye to pesky insects.

You can also transform one or two planters into a mini herbal garden. Plant peppers, tomatoes and cilantro and you’ll soon be making fresh-from-the-garden salsa or gazpacho. You can cook up tempting soups, dishes and dips from your herb garden. By planting a wide variety of herbs in your planter, you’ll be able to cook almost anything. Raise some mint and serve refreshing mint julep in an instant.

Your backyard patio is a fine place to hang out either by yourself or with family and friends. It is best appreciated and enjoyed with comfortable furniture and the warm inviting presence of plants. Let the lush greenery and colorful blooms envelop you with the beauty and fragrance only nature can give right in your own backyard.

If you’re really a serious gardener, then investing in gardening and lawn equipment is a sound decision. They are durable, make landscaping and gardening task easier, and will save you money over time. However, you don’t have to spend a lot for these equipment if you consider ways to cut down cost.

If a chainsaw, lawn mower, or an edge trimmer is a part of your gardening equipment list, you need to go for the basic models without the hi-tech gadgetry. Extra features raise the price tag on any item substantially. These features are also the first ones to break down which end up in costly repairs. Choose high quality brands but get the basic bare-bones models which will serve you well for years.

February is the slowest month as far as equipment sales is concerned. Shop for garden equipment in February when dealers need to clear out last year’s remaining equipment stocks to make room for newer models this year. Forgo shopping from March to June when prices for these items are at their peak.

Watch out for sales once summer has peaked as equipment dealers hit another low in sales around this time. You can avail of discounts as high as 20% to 25% on many lawn and garden products.

Visit gardening equipment supplies warehouse stores. Their yard equipment prices are much lower than those found in home improvement stores and hardware. And watch out for their big clearance sale at season’s end where you can get these items at rock-bottom prices. You have to be quick, though, before they’re all sold out.

Due to low overhead expenses and a wide customer base, Internet-based equipment suppliers often offer lower prices than brick-and-mortar dealers. Most equipment are cheaper, even if they include shipping and handling fees, if you order them online.

You can also buy used or reconditioned garden and lawn equipment. Search for them in the classified ads of your local paper, as well as in lawn mower repair shops. Be sure to check out the yellow pages under the headings of “garden equipment”, “lawn equipment” or “lawn mower” for companies selling their used equipment.

Once you purchased your desired gardening equipment, get more out of your money by providing them proper care and maintenance. Read the accompanying guide books and comply with the manufacturing company’s maintenance schedules so your lawn and garden equipment will be in tip-top shape whenever you need them.
