During the planning stage, take note of the immovable structures in the area such as the house, and all other permanent features that can’t be altered or moved out of the way. As a landscape gardener, you should work your dream garden around these existing areas.

What is the purpose of your landscape garden? Will it be a floral showcase that only the eyes can appreciate, or will it be a garden that you can relax in? You also need to reserve a space for leisure and recreation especially if you have a growing family and entertain guests often.

Determine which type of plant will adapt well to certain areas of your landscape garden’s environment. Make sure each plant type is in a place it is naturally accustomed to. Placing it in a sun-drenched spot will damage or kill a photosensitive plant. Likewise, placing a light-dependent plant under the shade will cause it to wither. A garden with live healthy plants is more pleasing than a rock garden.

Designing a landscape garden is a play of light and shadows. Think ahead if the young sapling you planted today will block the light from your bedroom window a couple of years from now. It can’t be moved to another area when it’s big unless you cut it down.

Also consider if large shady plants will eventually deprive the plants growing beneath them of much-needed sunlight. Plants growing under the shadow of taller plants or trees are often undersized and won’t bear much fruit or flowers.

Any landscape gardener worth their salt will know that water flow is an integral part of a garden for plants to survive. Determine if your area has low or high water pressure. Consider also if your area is prone to constant heavy rainfall. These factors will give you an idea of what kind of plants you should have in your garden.

Constructing a colorful landscape garden is possible even if you are a novice gardener. Just be sure to plan well and make the proper judgment and your every effort will eventually pay off.
